Small Gully was founded in 1999 by vignerons Robert Bader , Darren Zimmerman and wine maker Stephen Black . In 2002 a winery was built at Darren’s property situated in a “ small gully “ on Roennfeldt Road Greenock.
All of the people in Small Gully bring enormous passion to this business demonstrated by the fact that Robert started in the industry in 1981 whilst Darren’s Family has been growing grapes in the Valley since early in 1800 ; Stephen , after a successful career as a Pharmacist , became a full time wine maker in 1992 and also completed his post graduate studies at Roseworthy College.
Stephen’s background is reflected in the intriguing labels written as if they are a prescription !
Small Gully has received exceptional scores from Robert J Parker Jnr and until now most wines have been exported to the US.
The grapes produced by both Robert and Darren are from very mature low yielding vines especially Shiraz with small parcels of Grenache , Mourvedre and Cabernet being sourced from other local vineyards. Small Gully produces wines of a distinctive bold and intense Barossa style with great expression of fruit character which reflects the meticulous fruit selection.
Robert Parker Jnr has awarded all of The Formula and The Concoction wines with scores of 91 ; the Black Magic has 93 whilst it is noted the 2003 Grange scored 92 and there can be no better reference for these very reasonably priced wines !
